Philippi, West Virginia

Welcome to Philippi, West Virginia

Philippi, population 2,870, is the county seat of Barbour County, located in the north central portion of West Virginia on U.S. Routes 119 and 250.

Chartered in 1844, Philippi offers modern conveniences in a historical setting. The site of the first land battle of the Civil War, the town contains many reminders of its beginnings as the county seat of Barbour County, Virginia. Its famed Covered Bridge, the only two-lane covered bridge in the federal highway system, leads into an attractive and progressive community of locally owned businesses, professional services, and safe residential areas.

The first land battle of the Civil War is commemorated in the annual “Blue and Gray Reunion” historical re-enactment. Sections of Philippi have been awarded “historic district” status.

Visitors may trace Philippi’s history and development at the Historical Museum, Blue and Gray Park, and the downtown historic district.

Philippi offers good schools, churches, recreational facilities, a public library, hospital and clinics, a modern motel, fine restaurants, three banks, and a variety of businesses. The City owns its own electrical system. Fiber-optic cable is available throughout the City with speeds up to one gig. A City-owned 50,000 square foot building and a 20-acre industrial park are available for new industries.

Philippi has established planning and housing authorities, annexed adjacent residential and business areas and housing development. The City continues to upgrade utilities, streets, sidewalks, and curbing. Philippi has been designated an “All West Virginia Community” by the state Chamber of Commerce each year for more than a decade, and in 1991 won first place in the All-West Virginia Community for cities of its size. Philippi was selected to receive the All-America City Award in June 2004.

Philippi is near I-79, 20 minutes to the West. 20 minutes to the South is Corridor H. Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland is less than a two-hour drive. The Philippi/Barbour County Regional Airport has a 3200-foot runway and is equipped with dawn-to-dusk lights.

Philippi, A Good place to visit; a Great Place to Live.
